the Mayflower. They arrived on the north-east coast of North America in December 1620 and founded Plymouth.
It was winter and they had no homes and little food.
They built small homes, But it was too late to cultivate crops.
The winter was very cold and harsh. Their living conditions were very bad. The friendly Wampanoag Indians helped them during the long winter.In the spring the Pilgrims met an Indian called Squanto. He explained how to grow corn, hunt and live in the wilderness. Soon the Pilgrims and the Indians became good friends.
The Pilgrims worked hard . By November 1621 everyone had food and a home. There was hope for the future. The Pilgrim leader, decided to celebrate with a dinner for the Pilgrims and the Indians. He wanted to give thanks to God.
This was the first Thanksgiving dinner and it lasted for three days.
Today the traditional Thanksgiving meal is similar to the first.
People eatroast turkey, sweet potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.

This two phenomenons are just few part of reason which change our environment badly.There are many other reasons.
In nearly 100 years,the average global temperature experienced twice fluctuations which is “cold-warm-cold-warm”.Generally,it is the trend that global climate is becoming warmer and warmer .In 1980s,global temperature rised apparently.According to Chinese scientists,the average temperature in China has risen by 1.1 degrees centigrade in the last 5 decades.It is higher than the reported global average.We are seeing more frequent bouts of extreme weather in many parts of the country.For example,last spring,the most severe drought in 50 years hit northern China affecting the livelihood of 4 million people.Environmental damage and climate change is a reality for us.Out of the world?s most polluted 20 cities,half are in China,70% of Chinese rivers are polluted .China has become the largest carbon emitter of the world.

The first major dictionary compiled by Samuel Johnson drew on Shakespeare more than any other writer. Three thousand new words and phrases all first appeared in print in Shakespeare's plays. I remember from my own childhood how many of them are found for the first time in Henry V. Words like dishearten, divest, addiction, motionless, leapfrog – and phrases like "once more unto the breach", "band of brothers" and "heart of gold" – have all passed into our language today with no need to reference their original context. Shakespeare also pioneered innovative use of grammatical form and structure – including verse without rhymes, superlatives and the connecting of existing words to make new words, like bloodstained – while the pre-eminence of his plays also did much to standardise spelling and grammar.
But Shakespeare's influence is felt far beyond our language. His words, his plots and his characters continue to inspire much of our culture and wider society. And I’ve come to know our students – absolutely amazing students. To the parents who are here, thank you, thank you for sending these remarkable young people to us. They are nothing short of inspiring. Interacting with them is one of the great privileges of living and working on a college campus. Adele and I have had dinner with them in the Houses. We’ve watched them perform on the stage and on the playing fields. I’ve met with them during office hours and talked to them as I’ve gone running with them. If you spend time with our students, you cannot help but feel optimistic about our future.
This past week, I had lunch with thirty graduating seniors. It was wonderful to hear how they think they have changed and matured during their four years here. I actually asked them how is your current self different from your 18-year-old self that arrived here on campus, and the stories were marvelous. "no problem，" the tired traveler assured him。 "i'll take it。"
the next morning， john came down to breakfast bright—eyed and bushy—tailed。 when asked about how he slept， he replied， "never better。"
the manager was impressed。 "no problem with the other guy snoring， then？"
"nope。 i shut him up in no time。"
"how'd you manage that？"
"he was already in bed， snoring away， when i came in the room，" john said。 "i went over， gave him a kiss on the cheek， said， 'goodnight， beautiful。' with that he sat up all night watching me。
